The City of Fort Valley is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Accounts Payable/Payroll Clerk. This position is responsible for performing skilled accounting and administrative work in processing accounts payable, payroll, and related financial transactions for the City. The Accounts Payable/Payroll Clerk shall ensure timely and accurate payments to vendors and employees while maintaining compliance with city policies, municipal code, state, and federal laws.

Qualified applicants should possess a high school diploma or GED, with an associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a preferred related field, along with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in payroll and/or accounts payable processing, preferably in a government or municipal setting. Experience with accounting and payroll software systems is required, with preference given to candidates familiar with municipal finance systems. An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may also be considered.

The applicant must possess or have the ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia. The Accounts Payable/Payroll Clerk must demonstrate knowledge of accounting principles, payroll processing, tax withholding, and reporting requirements, along with proficiency in accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and related applications. This position is responsible for processing vendor invoices, preparing and issuing payments, maintaining accounts payable and 1099 records, and processing weekly payroll with accurate deductions and benefits tracking. The role also includes submitting required federal and state tax reports, reconciling accounts monthly, assisting with audits and budget reporting, and responding to vendor and employee inquiries. The employee must maintain confidentiality, perform other related duties as assigned, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
