Middle Georgia Regional Commission has recently received $1,500,000 in funding for Brownfield revitalization efforts in both Macon-Bibb and Baldwin counties from the US EPA. A brownfield is a property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Examples of Brownfields may include, but are not limited to, locations of former industrial sites, gas stations, dry cleaners, buildings with asbestos or lead-based paint, petroleum facilities, former landfills, former wood-treatment facilities, and former pesticide/herbicide handling areas.

The funding provided allows for nonintrusive site evaluation for developers/property owners, determining if hazardous substances are present. If a location is impacted, then determinations of necessary actions to enable future, new use of the site. The benefits of the EPA Brownfield include improved tax base, job numbers, property values, and reduction of environmental concerns.
